I just got this coral today from seacrop.com. It's really nice :) It's a soft coral - I'd guess a finger coral of some sort, but I'm not really sure.

My main question is that it wasn't mounted to any kind of rock or base at all. I placed it in an area of moderately high waterflow and moderate light. I looked again a little later and it had slipped off from where I put it, but I know it was there securely.

Is this a kind of coral that can move itself? Do I need to mount it to something?

Any help would be much appreciated :)

You can mount it to a rock with super glue gell, and they dont move on their own, it was your current that moved it. Just put a small amount of gell on the base it will bond to your rock even if the rock is still under water.
I have edited to add that your tank (from what I have read in your other post) is a new tank, and your lighting is standard tank lighting. I would have to strongly sugest that you up grade your lighting to power compacts or any corals you have may soon die. Also, how do you know that your tank is done cycling? You may want to consider holding off on any new coral purchases.

Thanks RamJet - any underwater epoxy? Is there anything special I should look for in the super glue ingredient wise?

epoxy works well with hard corals but not well with soft. You will find the super glue gel to work best. I use loctite if your looking for a brand name to buy, I have had no problems with it. Also, I have edited the above post and wanted to make sure you read it and understand that you are not really ready for corals at this time. Good luck, hope it helps.

Oh, I just check your other post and see that you started this back in September. Cycle should be done with, but have you up graded from that standard fluorescent light?
coralife makes a good one, runs around $100. Or, if you have the money to burn, they make one with built in moon lights, mine was $200.

Thanks RamJet. I'll run out to the store this afternoon.

I am upgrading my lighting - I have a 110w on its way from AquaTraders. I thought I'd put that in my journal, but maybe not. It should be here shortly.

I don't see why my tank wouldn't be cycled, from what I understood, there are some who believe that enough LR will cycle a tank instantly and I have >1lb per gallon. Also, I've got 2 fish that are doing very well. I've monitored my ammonia levels from the beginning watching for a spike to indicate that the tank wasn't cycled and never got one.

I have sea squirts and other little filter feeders as well. The little filter feeders I have are little coiled shapes on the glass. WetWebMedia has in their Q & A section a couple links that said that these were relatives of the fanworm and are indicative of a tank that's doing really well and is starting to mature.

I've purposefully started off with polyps and softies as I know they are *generally* the hardiest and best for beginners.

We were posting at the same time :)

I am getting the 110w light from AquaTraders - 55w fluorescent and 55w actinic. I had upgraded my lighting slightly, but am not happy with the results which is why I'm upgrading further.

I've had my brown polyps for over a month now. I lost the yellow ones that were with it, but the brown polyps have really grown since I first got them.

You may need to watch your water temp closely using the jebo, I dont believe that they have any type of fan built into them. Your water temp can get to high during the day. Anyone up for some fish soup?

Will do, thank you. The 130w had built in cooling fans, but the 110w didn't. The 130w was out of stock so I got the 110 instead. If I'd noticed that it didn't have the cooling fans I probably would have waited for the 130.
