the cobalt blue is a zebra. trade names are very hard to go by. actually the scientific name is pseudotropheus callainos. goldie girl is a red zebra or psuedotropheus estherae. the two will cross breed if given the chance. basically same fish just different color morph.

the yellows, sunny and sunshine are yellow labs. labidochromis caureleus. all are in the mbuna family.

as for the firemouth and the jewel, they are not african. you might find that mixed with the africans is a mistake. had mbunas with sa/ca's when i first started and ended up seperating them. mbunas are aggressive especially when mating. the first firemouth i had got beat on by my chippokae. the jewels when they started to mate became really aggressive with the mbunas. lost of fighting going on in the tank.

i don't know if you read my answer to your question regarding the johanni. there are two strains of johanni. chisumula and maingano. would say that joe is a maingano. the maingano are usually more electric than the chisumula. joe is also that a joe. females of the johannis are a dull brown or gold. johannis are the unfortunate ones that the females are so dull in coloring that the males are more desirable. female johanni are very hard to find since they are usually not chosen due to their coloring. males are much more desirable.

do you have another krib in with kribbie? looks like she is getting to lay some eggs. do not know that much about kribs. but her stomach is fat and her belly red. maybe cm will peek in here and give some input.

Thanks for the compliments everyone, they are my wifes babies so I'll pass it along :*) .

....semper fi I think we were replying to each others posts at the same time   . We had the Cichlids already mixed before we knew what we were doing, but I discussed them a bit with CM (on another forum) and he gave us a quick rundown on the potential trouble that could develop. We were figuring that the Jewel would probably rule the tank, and the Ram might get picked on, he did recomend not mixing the Africian & SA/CA's but as they were all getting along my wife and I decided to leave them as is and keep a close eye on them. So far it's been 6 months and other than Blue and Goldie boy chasing each other around in competition for Goldie girl, (and Joe laying down the law with the newist addition Johan) the Mbunas have been well behaved, Jewlie has no mate so I'm not too worried about breeding aggression (unless there was a chance of cross breeding with one of the others) and she seems to be the least aggressive one in the tank so far. Rambo and Mick take turns being the tank nobs and trying to start trouble, but it never seems to escalate far. The one thing we are watching out for is one of the pairs mating (especially the Labs) and becomming aggressive, if this happens they will be relocated.
As for little Kribbie, we do have a male with them (presently in QT for popeye/Dropsy, seems to be making a recovery...fingers crossed) but that's her natural shape and color, the belly turns plum red when she is happy, and black when she is p*ssed.

We continue to monitor in the hopes that the aggression levels don't rise, but if they do we are prepared to do some relocating, I'll try to keep everyone updated if there are any changes. :D

Here is a shot of the newbie...Johan, formerly Joanne until the second spot appeared on his anal fin and we clued in that she was a he
