I really don't want to hijack this, but I was wondering if you had any photos of the eggs in the bubble nest?

I'm trying to breed an Orange half-moon and a dark blue (I gave up on the orange/orange, he didn't like her) and I'm not sure how I can tell if they have already embraced and the eggs are already in the nest.

I released the female yesterday. They appear to be getting along just fine. They swim around together in the breeding tank, the male has a nice nest that the female hasn't torn up, they spend a lot of time hanging around under the nest, they follow each other around, the female has a few very minor nips, but I don't know if they've been embracing.

This is my first time attempting a spawn, any help would be greatly appreciated!

Naaah, you're not hijacking. This thread is over anyway ;)

I personally have never taken a really good shot of eggs in the nest. But you should be able to tell by the way they're acting. If he is guarding the nest AND you're certain they're done embracing, then it's safe to assume the eggs have landed. You can see them if you shine a flashlight in the nest. Here is a link to rain's thread where she posted some amazing egg pics. Sometimes the male will line them along the wall like that.

How long does it normally take before they begin to embrace?

The female has been released for about 20 hours now and I still see no sign that they have every embraced.

How long should I wait before I surrender?

Pairs can take as long as a week to spawn, others don't spawn at all and others spawn within minutes of being put together (so I've heard anyway, I've never had a pair do that, Lol). On average I think 1-3 days is normal, at least in my spawns. Give them time as long as they're not killing each other.

Thanks shrks1fan!!

At least it puts my mind at ease.

My females got a few nips, but she's ok.

I'm preping and conditioning my other set of half-moons shoudl these ones not do the trick. But if it's 1-3 days then I'm still in good shape. He really took a liking to her really fast and she did the same, but they never embraced. I'll give 'em a few more days before I throw in the towel.

Thanks again!!

Three months old and being jarred :X I thought maybe I could leave the bossiest fish in and not pull it and hopefully I could keep them in the grow out longer. That didn't work, they're shredding each other  I've only jarred around 5 out of about 30-40 males. Anyhoo, here's a jist of the end result. My best bf's are jarred already and I haven't taken pics of them. A couple are just gorgeous

Its amazing how they've come on since the last pics around 5 weeks ago!

Can't wait to see your jarred ones :)

Just beautiful, Kelly, all of them. especially that cambodian, he's simply dreamy. Congrats on another fabu spawn!

 *applause* You've done it again, my friend. Are these your next season show fish? Or are reds going? Or both? :hyper: Awesome.

awww, thanks you guys  I didn't even think anybody would look in this thread again :*)

Julie~ not sure yet. I think I'm going to spawn back to the MG for now. I'm still undecided as to what exactly is the fate of this particular spawn. It was really just because I needed a couple of females :*)

Here are a few of the jarred guys. I absolutely love the two on top. They're my twins  The pics do them no justice. I hope their BF pattern turns out nice now that they're jarred and feeling manly enough to bubblenest. They're just oh so cute. The one in the bottom right corner has the most outstanding BF pattern, but unfortunately he and the one on his left were caught rough housing and the one on the right had his anal fin shredded and ruined. We'll see what happens.
