Yep its a bolivian. And I believe its a male, not 100% though as its difficult to tell with them, but the pinted first dorsal spines and long pectorals point to male.

Jon

p.s. lovely fish

Nice fish. Not to contradict but i think it's a female. The second and last pic looks like it might have a faintly peachy-pink coloured belly. Males have much bolder colours, more yellow-gold on their body.... well atleast my male bolivian does. It's probably still a juvie so it's hard to tell.

Only certain way I have found is the pectoral fin reaching past the start of the anal fin. All the other rules are not complied when refering to rams. In that way I stick by my diagnosis. Still may be wrong though.

Yes your right, in males the FIRST spike is longest but it doesnt mean females can not have spikes. In their pic it look liked the first few spikes are short. Here's an example with my blue rams. Also the colours in the belly are very good rule to follow for most rams, i find i notice the colour before the spikes. The more mature my male grew, the longer his spikes later grew but he always kept the same colour from the beginning.
Male with yellow body(no pink) and extremely long first spike:

Female with pink belly and spikes but no long first spike:

But as you said, we still would need a better picture to clarify. If it's got those first long spikes you win jflowers but if it's first spikes aren't long and it has the pretty pink belly i win. :p
Hurry Aquarius get a clearer picture, we're dying over here! lol

I somehow think it's female, but as you guys said yourselves...I may be wrong too

There is someone on the forum that helped me figure out if my ram was male or female but I forget who

but he/she is a nice fish either way :D

Edit: Mamaschild is the one that helped me

 can't believe i wrote that

thanks for all your input. i was kind of leaning towards it being a female just because it's not very colorful and doesn' have long spikes but it could still be a juvi so who knows :dunno: i just wanted to have a pair
