Hi all,

I am setting up a 10 gal (US) as a fry tank and would like to grow Java Moss. I have installed two 15 watt CF lights. The color of the lights is 2700K. Is this an appropriate color/wave length?

Thanks,

Erik

Thanks for the response. I should have asked the question before I purchased them. The hardware store only had the 2700K. Any idea where I can get the 6400K?

Erik

SM is basically right, 2700K is to low for planted tank use. For Java Moss, as long as you are not expecting luxuriant growth, it will probably suffice. Java Moss will almost grow in the dark.

Since I don't live in Hawaii, I can't suggest a place, but I'd wait a bit and see if the 2700K's are doing enough for your requirement before chucking them out and investing in something else.

Also, since I don't live in Hawaii, instead live in a freezing cold, dark, wet, grey, windy, expensive, overtaxed...... :-(

The picture doesnt look great but both these light cost the same.. one is a Phillips warm white 2700K the other is a BHOWMIK daylight white 6400K..

Also I have no idea here you could get some. ask around?

LL and Sm thanks for the useful replies. LL please correct me if I am wrong, as I did not pick up much of the Danish language from my parents, tok.

Could the three of us be more geographicaly dispersed?

Erik

Thanks or thank you in Danish, (Swedish and Norwegian as well incidently), is "tak".

I wondered actually when I saw the spelling of your name if you were of Scandinavian ancestry. I agree, the three of us in the thread are fairly well spread!

If you got a wal mart most sale a 5500k light called a sunny light. But is very bright for a 10g and can (will) cuase a algae outbreak.

LL Tak. I guess I shouldn't expect my spelling to be any bettor in Danish than it is in English.

DO Thanks for the reply. I will check out Wal-Mart.

I do expect algea and that may not be all bad in a fry tank. Will Java Moss grow enough to absorb enough nutriants to keep algea somewhat under control?

Erik

Depends on the nutrient levels of course, but probably not.

If you get the lights at wal mart you can have alot more than java moss in there. It will give you a high light level and with only Java moss you will gets loads of algae. You need some fast growing plants. While at wal mart see if they sale any plant bulbs they are normaly over by the fish food. Also hornwort would be good. It is fas growing and good for algae.
