Well I decided not to bleach my plants after all when I saw how cheaply I could get them from Java! So I drained it instead and added some heating cable and Duponic soil. I then added a mixed substrate of grit, gravel and sand to produce what I think is a very natural looking base that should be perfect for my plants when they arrive later this week! What do you think?

Is the gravel/sand mix the same all the way along? Are you getting a collection of plants from Java or have you gone for specifics?

I am gonna replace my 40L with a 125L this weekend and am still deciding if I should stick with more of the same gravel, get sand or a mix.

It looks good though - like you say more natural. :)

Burns

I esp. like the texture of the substrate! Can't wait to see the tank with plants in it, so be sure to post pics when you're done. :)

burn, I mixed 15kg of aquarium grit, which is one size up from sand with 10kg of 8/16th size gravel. I added this on top of the Duponic soil / sand base layer. I then poured 15kg of aquarium sand on top of that and let it settle naturally. The movement of the fish (fast bottom dwellers such as Pictus, see pic) and the filter have created the effect you can see. Basically as the sand is finer than the grit and the gravel the movement of the water forces it to fall into the gaps allowing the gravel and grit to show through. The result is that no two inches of the substrate are the same, totally natural look! In answer to the other question I ordered the 103 plant collection that I hope will be arriving tomorrow!! I will post pics when they do.
