Just thought I'd post a picture of my piranha too since nethius did too :p

He's about 6 inches now and I feed him dethawed raw shrimp tied to a fishing line

Here's the tank, I know, it sucks, but I read somewhere that they'll chew up plants or something :dunno:
Substrate is black along with background to make him darker, since he changes color to suit environment

last one

EDIT: pictures aren't so clear because in order to get a bright shot without flash, I had to slow down the shutter speed

He's a beauty. Aren't they one of the most aggressive species of pirahna? They'll tear anything apart that goes in that tank right??

Nice rhom :) I'd do away with the plants all together and decorate the tank with a few big root like lumps of bogwood and mangrove root to make a more authentic Amazonian setting and bring the best out of the fish. Plants and P's rarely work out as the plants require more light than the fish are happy to tolerate.

unphased - usually fish stores sell them or places online
rvm - yeah that's what they say, but I think that's for a full grown 15"+ of this species. Though he does follow my finger when I touch the glass :) But yeah, he does take care for any fish that happen to fall into the tank
cfc - I think I'm actually going to take your suggestion because he is slowly cutting all the plastic plants, the sword is almost gone and others keep missing stems  I like the idea of the root-bog wood but I just don't know where I could find big pieces of wood like that, my LFS sucks in that aspect -_-

Silly question.....what happens if you put your hand in the tank?

Why is he fed with a fishing line?

I know nothing about piranhas and figure it would be best to ask someone who has one as opposed to going to google or somewhere. All I know is a school of piranhas can strip a cow of its flesh in a short time. But one?

Curiosity...

He is not ugly....he is very handsome....i love the mouth...>AWESOME!!!!

They are illegal in australia.....damn government

Well, they're not that aggressive, but I don't doubt that they would take a bite if you put your hand close enough to them... -_-

I use a fishing line so I can suspend the raw shrimp to make it more appetizing for him, also so that I can easily take out the uneaten portion.
Indeed they can strip a cow to the bone in a short time. This species specifically lives on its own but feeds in large groups, as opposed to say the red bellied piranha who feeds and lives only in groups. Thanks and hope that answers your question :)
