My plants are brown!

My plants are sooo crapy! i dont know why! they have just all got this brown stuff on it and it looks ugly and gross. How do i get rid of it?

Also there are all these green dots on the glass of my tank. It must be a form of algea, how do i get rid of it?

But there was no Direct aproach to it. I need something to get rid of it straight away as it is infecting everything.

its a common problem with newly set up tanks or tanks that are experiencing nutrition "spikes" well thats what i read around, well basically to take care of the algae you have to do it slowly, there really isnt a overnight solution, and if there is i doubt its good for your fishes, brown algae ( diatoms ) are really naturally occuring and in my opinion should be controlled and not eradicated, makes the tank look a bit more natural hope this helps

btw my advice would be to get algae eating fishes, like ottos, plecs. etc etc, just be carefull that you dont get the ones that aren't right for your tank, like me the first time i experienced that problem i got myself a common plec and it ripped apart the plants in my tank

kenneth got it spot on about the new setup.. after a tank cycled the brown algae seems to grow very well for a month or two, but if your lighting and plant health is good it will go away just as fast as it started.

but low light is also a cause, so is hight nitrates.

what is your current light levels in your tank?

Believe it or not, normal snails (the kind that hitchhike on new plants) are great for cleaning algae off the glass. I had a thin rim of brown algae right at the gravel level - only way for me to clean it would be to disturb all the gravel round the tank edges. Some snails hitchhiked in on some plants, I found them eating the algae line one day. Nearly cleared it all away in a week or so.
