A couple of weeks ago I went to Win Tropical looking for more coppers. The shelves were bare. The owner placed all the females into one tank with one Peruvian ram. Looked like a neat tank with all those females swimming around. He had a few veitails and crowns, but nothing spectacular. The week after I went to check again for any new shipments. Looks like a few new crowns, less females, and the same ram. Mind you, this is only the betta section, not his whole store. :) Anyway, I went last Friday to get a ram (because it looks like the rams he has are acclimated to tap water. But.... Lo and behold - solid color plakats (red and blue) galore. Maybe about 60 of them. I spotted a single cambodian plakat and put that one aside. No chances on someone else picking him up. Then I went to work, placing each container (about 60 of them) one-by-one next to the cambodian, looking for flare and activity. I wound up getting the cambodian and a red one. Both are still unnamed. The cambodian looks like a short-finned version of buttons. But this red one is a shade brighter than I'm used to - not betta-for-show red, but evenly red all over. This red one is a nut! I approach his bowl and he flares! I poke my finger at him, he flares at it. He sees Buttons in the next tank, he flares. He basically flares at any movement. Hmmmmm.... -_- Come to think of it, he might be nearsighted. No problem, he'll just get glasses. :)

That is a funny, funny picture. Maybe contacts would be better since he's in the water all the time...

Congrats on your new guys. They sound great!

i would liked to have seen a pic of all 60 plakat together ;)
i'll just have to settle for pics of your new guys, right? (hint hint) ;)

Of course I would post pics! But my parents are borrowing the camera while babysitting my nephew, tomato-head butterball (that's my name for him), as my sister and her hubby are on vacation. I'll post pics in a few days.

I think this new red guy really wants to fight or kill something - even Evil Ryu backs down, and doesn't even back down from Sagat who is a point bigger than he is.

hmm, could he be a decendant of the legendary red thai fighter "plakat dang pad rew"?

"A bird eyes view of Betta splendens' kingdom in the river call "Bang Pa Kong" in "Cha Chueng Sao" province or in the former name "Pad Rew" (100 kms from Bangkok). Without any documentary support, the tale "Pad Rew" was the first emergence of Modern Plakat Thai or captive Betta splendens. "Plakat Pad Rew" follow its province name, was so famous and well known that hardly to defeat. "Dang Pad Rew" (Red color bred from Pad Rew) was the renowned fighter (now become rare color). Today, modern agricultural industry take over the traditional breeding fighting fish of the villager. But theirs' strain already has spread all over the country. The legend of Plakat Thai owed its name on "Plakat Pad Rew"." - precha (plakatthai.com)

Hi Itty Bitty Betta :)

Win Tropical sounds like a very nice lfs. Do they usually have many different kinds of corys?

Actually, I read somewhere that all plakats have terrible eyesight compared to other bettas. Supposedly they can't really see dark females as well as they can a lighter girl.

congrats on your new additions :)

Cool! Then I'll probably name him something along those lines. Maybe "Dang Banger" - like gangbanger. :shifty: VERY interesting story!

It's a small mom-n-pop store located in Chinatown, but closer to Little Italy. They rarely - and I mean RARELY - have cories, but they do have otos up the wazzoo. They also have arowanas, angels, angelcats, parrotfish, rams, sometimes small pikes, tetras and other small species, some cichlids, flowerhorns, various catfish, various goldfish, and their specialty - betta in a Snapple bottle. Their prices are cheaper by a considerable amount when compared to Petco and Petland Discounts. Whereas someone may sell a halfmoon for $35 or a crowntail for $20, the fancy bettas are all $6 and all plakats and females are $3.

I recommend any aquarium hobbyist visit that store next time they are in New York City.

Thanx! And thanx for clearing up that all bettas have bad eyesight. I thought they were just too stupid to find floating food. :) Odd, though. Except for the 2 new aquisitions, they don't seem to like bloodworms as they did before. All they want is the Hikari pellets. -_-

Here is my new' unnamed cambodian plakat. He's pretty easy to take a picture of. :)

And this is Dang Banger (dang = red <thai>).
It's very difficult to take a picture of him because he's always moving when flaring. Best of 3 pictures out of 99 shots taken....
