I think devil is right. Did some research, and it looks just like a juvenile buenos aires . . . I decided I shouldn't keep him. But this story has a happy ending. I returned it at a different shop, same name/company. They traded me a nice little cherry barb, and since they had no buenos aires for sale, they instead added him to a well established display tank with lots of small tetras and rasboras, and densely planted java fern and anubius. Those are plants tough enough to stop the Buenos' eating habits, so it looks like he got a good home.
