Some forumites will be aware that it's been a tough year for me and my tanks. I inadvertently caused a massive pH spike in my 30g about 6 months ago which led to a mass die off of all my fish :( and really knocked my confidence. My frogs survived and I got them a little 9g (I think) which is absolutely thriving. It's got a cool little shrimp community, something I've not done before as a relative novice. I bought four crystal blue (?) shrimp but the shrimplets that have been born are orange and white which is interesting! I had a bit of an issue initially with algae but now that I've got the lighting levels right that seems to have resolved. There's some algae on some botanicals and the glass that you'll see in the pics but it's not problem algae so I'm not too fussed. I was able to save my tiger lotus from the 30g which is slowly starting to take over, some trimming is definitely in order soon. I'd like to change some of the decor for more natural wood or something similar at some stage.

My 6g also had issues, unfortunately my betta developed some fin rot which didn't get better with treatment so I had to euthanise him. I'd had him for a year and was told he was about 18 months when I got him so I think he did well but was disappointed I couldn't save him. In recent weeks I've picked up a scarlet badis, Sidney, for that tank, and he's settled in well, although he's a nightmare to photograph! I put a tiger lotus bulb in his tank which has started growing in nicely, and some aponogetum crispus. As an interim I have put some fake plants in the back while I wait for the real ones to grow in more, they're a bit garish but he likes playing in them. Hopefully I'll be able to remove them soon. His diet is live bloodworms, I've tried daphnia but he seems scared to eat them for some reason! The frogs are also now on a live food diet as it made sense to feed them the same.

I'm really hoping that next year is calmer in my little aquarium world. Having two nano tanks is very limiting in terms of what I can keep, which is a big downside, but I've got the tanks in a good place and they are much easier to maintain with my health issues so I think I'll stick to nano tanks. I have my work desk next to my tanks and Sidney loves watching me work and interacting. I probably lose a lot of time just looking at the tanks when I'm meant to be working!

How did you “inadvertently caused a massive pH spike” if you don’t mind me asking? I like to try to learn from peoples issues as much as I can.

I'll never be 100% sure but from the discussions I had on here I think it was due to me putting some cheap root tabs in which released everything into the water column. Very tough lesson to learn as I had a nice little community tank going and was really happy with it, very much knocked my confidence. Now I only use branded root tabs and haven't had any issues.

How is the badis with shrimplets?
Unfortunately the shrimp in my badis tank died after a few weeks. I found one wedged behind the light and never found the others so not sure if Mr Badis had a hand in their demise but he's so small I can't see it personally. When I have a few more from the colony in my other tank I'm gonna try and put a few more in the badis tank as those shrimp are thriving.
