Hey all and welcome to my diary!

My 54 litre freshwater aquarium at the time of starting the diary on the 28th November 2024.

Recent changes:
My aquarium is now 4 years old and it has recently recovered from a long infestation of algae so I'm finally getting it back into the positive things in my life, and very much so! The cleaned up tank looked so nice that I started putting effort to it once more.

During the past 2 weeks I've bought 2 more interesting plants, Leopard Vallisneria and Tiger Lotus (I had only very few hardy plants left) and increased the lighting time to 7-8h for the new plants to thrive. I also started using fertlizers again, and am now testing out Tropica Premium Nutrition by doing weekly water tests at a local aquarium dealer. I would like to hear your experiences with that one. Nearly all plants have appeared with new tiny leaves just recently. I was also missing algae eaters, so now nearly a week ago I bought 5 Otos, sold as Macrotocinclus affinis (previously known as Otocinclus affinis).

The arrival day of Otos. 22th November 2024. Plant leaves have some surface film for them to eat.

My newest reason for joy is that the Otos started finally eating, on the 6th day after arriving (other than plant mucus), so I'm happy not to lose any of them! I made them spirulina-meat-jelly from unaccepted fish foods and rubbed it on a wooden sushi stick. It's mimicking Repashy Soilent Green with its idea and content and commercial 'crab sticks' from its appearance. I had already started to get worried about the survivability of Otos in my tank, so I'm extremely happy about this recent change!

Reagents of the home made spirulina-meat-jelly: unaccepted tetra foods and spirulina tablets which fell apart too fast in the aquarium. Extra jelly bits went to the freezer.

What is left is to figure out what to feed my green neon tetras, since they haven't accepted freeze dried Brine shrimp, frozen Daphnias nor micro pellets and are spitting out many flake foods. But the good news is that they are active and healthy and have been for years so they must get enough food somehow.

Clear water by Seachem Purigen and brighter and dimmer areas due to the changes in the led on the 27'th November 2024.

Last Monday after water change I also finally started using Seachem Purigen 50ml, which I'm also very glad about since the sunken wood started colouring my aquarium water. Also what is to be noted is that some of the led bulbs in my led slight have dimmed a bit and few burned out completely: making the tank partly a bit dimmer but I've taken a very great liking to both the bright and dimmer areas and find it quite attractive. It also enables me to have the light on longer times without worrying about a possible algae issue.

Aquarium details:
I have a 4 years old freshwater aquarium, which brand and model is Eheim Aquastar 54 litre LED. I've upgraded the filter to an oversized EHEIM biopower 160 litre filter with mechanical filter media, Eheim Substrat Pro and Seachem Purigen (50 ml) in it, finished with a surface flow pipe for a smooth natural like water exit. Light is Eheim classicLED Daylight 7,7 W with 7-8h light per day and Eheim thermocontrol 50 W heater.

Hardscape:
I have black gravel in the front and sides and coarse sand in the back where most of the plants are. Sunken wood, decorative stone features and many medium sized smooth stones of different colours.

Water treatment:
Tetra AquaSafe
5ml/10 litres and fertilizers are Tropica Premium Nutrition 2ml (1 pump) /50 litres 3 times a week (every other day) and root tablets are JBL ProFlora Ferropol Root. No added CO2, no aeration since there is a sufficient surface flow with this filter.

Water parameters:
Tested last Monday the 25th November at an aquarium service centre and store. Temperature: 24 Celsius pH: 7.1 GHd: 4 KHd: 3 NO2: 0 NO3: 15 PO4: 0.2 Fe: 0.2 K: 7 Mg: 2 CO2: 7.2 Conductivity: 210 (I'm still in a process of increasing fertilization by adding the weekly dose split up to 3 doses which is given every other day. I also tested more foods recently which increased PO4. I performed a 34% water change later on that day.)

Plants:
From the left, Tiger Lotus, Cryptocoryne, Leopard Vallisneria, Amazon sword plant and 2 moss balls in the shadow at the right.

Animals:
About 17 green neon tetras, 5 Macrotocinclus affinis (Otos), a few bumblebee snails and 1 Amano shrimp.

Routines:
Daily monitoring the status of the aquarium and feeding tetras with flake food and otos with a jelly which is mimicking the idea of Repashy Soilent Green, which is unavailable in Finland. Currently doing weekly 20-30% water changes by hoovering the bottom of the tank which removes leftover fish foods and debris. I also clean the filter media in the removed aquarium water in order to preserve the beneficial bacteria and scrub the front glass, leaving other glasses to grow surface film for Otos.

Green neon tetras happily shoaling last Sunday. (Poor quality of the video is due to the video being taken further away, not to interrupt the fish.)

Great looking tank! I'm happy to see the Oto's doing well. My luck with them hasn't been the best in recent years. The spirulina-meat-jelly was a great idea too! Just one thing to add the amano shrimp might benefit from having more numbers as they are a sociable species. Also one of my favorite aquascapers is from Finland as well, have you seen any of Martia Kivioja's work before?

Hey @MattW! Thank you so much for your kind words! I really appreciate it!

I used to have at least one more Amano, but it passed at some point. I can't recall if there were more of them initially. You are right, it should have more company. I have forgotten about it and need to decide what to do. Thank you for your input for the better of my aquarium beings!

I haven't heard about aquascapers much, except Josh Sim through GreenAqua's youtube video some years ago. I found Marita Kivioja's instagram now and she seems very skilled!

That was the problem I had too. Had a trio that lasted 3-4 years and went down to one within months. Decided to add that one to my 90L along with 4 others, a very happy shrimp now .

I'll have to give that Green Aqua video a watch sometime looks very interesting. Marita has great scaping skills indeed. Sadly it's been a while since any updates hopefully she's doing ok 🤞.

Otos having a lunch! 💚

I'm still so happy and relieved that they are finally eating! Now for the 3'd day and I've had them for a week now. There's still the challenge of how to feed them if I'm away. Need to perhaps teach them somehow to finding pellets also. Otherwise it'll be fasting time for them of the supplementary foods over the Christmas.

Close up of my Green Neon Tetras with a couple of Otos

For evening entertainment. Green Neon Tetras and Otos chilling before the lights went out.

I don't know what they eat to stay fit and chubby, but maybe I don't need to know. As long as they keep being that I'll just continue with the routines.

"Hello!"

My aquarium setting

IMG_20241130_221434527_HDR.jpg

Here I spend most of my time when at home, at the computer. At times following what's happening in the tank and being enthralled by it. Sometimes I move in front of it to stare. After a while the tetras move closer to look at what am I doing here sitting on the floor.

IMG_20241130_220722816_HDR.jpg

At evenings the tank shines even brighter and is part of setting the beautiful mood at home.

IMG_20241130_221725354_HDR.jpg

Kitchen right behind. It's compact living here in the capital region, which I like actually. I've been thinking about a bigger 100-200 litre aquarium at times, but there's little room for it so I try to fancy this one instead. Bigger one is probably 5-10 times the work than what this one needs.

Christmas lights up on the balcony, shining like that most of the day since in Finland in the winter time it's dark outside starting from 4-5pm! Happy Christmas season! It starts here in under an hour now with the start of December! Have you got your Christmas calender yet?

IMG_20241130_215343851_HDR.jpg

Aquarium is a living calender every day!! :D

My evening aqua. It's serene and calming to watch the action in the aqua. So, here's something to look at before sleep, if you wish. Remember to up the quality setting of the video to HD.

I'm btw considering to try Neocaridina davidi var. "Yellow" in my tank. The bottom level of my tank looks kinda empty: there could be more life. Can't wait to get them! Maybe on Monday. The yellow ones with a thick yellow line. I would also buy some Java Moss for them to enjoy and hide in. See if they would thrive in my aqua. Exciting! Just, too bad they are kind of expensive here when you need to buy many and often still small.

Basic Vallisneria_planted today 20241201.png

5 new baby basic Vallisneria plants now in a row in the very back right.

Added a bit more plant substance. I didn't want to over do it, many more were available for free.

One of the decorative stones is still holding down the sunken wood. It would still float. Maybe after a week I can put the stone back to its normal position. And yes, I have coarse sand in the back of my tank, for plants. It should trap nutrients from root tablets well.

Lovely tank and setting! Once that tiger lotus grows in it'll completely change the look but in a good way!

I visited a local famous fish store again today to get my pre-water-change tank water tested properly. I have the quick tests only but they test properly free of charge! The results weren't pretty:

Test: (recom.)NO3 (15-20)NO2 (<0.1)PO4GHd (4-8)KHd (2-4)pH (6.5-6.9)CO2 (5-15)Fe (0.4-0.8)K (8-12)Mg (5-9)Conductivity (under 450)

I've been clearly overfeeding still, with trying to get my tetras not to spit the foods out. I also had 2 bottom feeder fish Gastromyzon ctenocephalus which I've been clearly over feeding also. I haven't mentioned them here before, because they were looking for a new home already when I started on this forum. They have moved to their new homes now, which will lessen the nitrate and phosphorous load. The lonely Amano shrimp will also go to a new home tomorrow! The tank gets bit more empty, but I tell myself it's 'good empty': getting ready for possibly some yellow Neocaridinas!!

I did a large 2/3 water change today after the water test in order to properly get rid of the phosphorus and nitrate. The bottom of the tank also looked like it needed some cleaning already. The water change made my tank start "pearling". Pretty! By adding water I think I might have hurt a few Tiger Lotus leaves. But gladly it has established itself well now and will continue to thrive! I also got Seachem Iron, in order to up that a notch. It's amount in water had lowered to a half in a week, though I had added the Tropica Premium Nutrition 1/3 dose every other day. Now that I think of it, I should have maybe bought some magnesium too. Maybe.

Pearling

A little big update: I did observe my green neon tetras finally eat some frozen Daphnia cut into very small pieces from the freezed block!!! Super news!

Eheim autofeeder.png
Now just need to get them back to eating some flakes too so I can put the flake autofeeder on while on holiday.

Second observation is that the Otos often like to hang where the feeding rod is! Making me think the food is a real success story! Super! I'm just not sure how often I should feed them and how much. They take their time feeding.

Otos hanging at the spot of the feeding stick. Just before the picture there were 3 all lined up as if the stick was still there.
