So I had an algae problem that I finally got under control. At no point while I had algae on the tank, filter, heater, was the water green. The algae was finally getting under control and suddenly my water turned green. I’m at a loss how to fix it so need some help. Two water changes ago I did a bigger change and cleaned the filter and heater of algae as well as scraping off as much as I could from the tank and the water still turned green. I bought some test strips due to the kit I had being old and most of it seems fine besides the alkalinity, which I’m not sure of, and the ph is higher but I don’t believe that would cause the green water.

Does anyone know what I can do to get rid of the green water?

Sorry for the double picture of the one, I didn’t get a good one of the ranges page with the test strip.

Picture of the tank so we can see the algae and how its planted out?

How many live plants are in the tank?
How long are the lights on for?
What plant fertiliser do you use and how often do you use it?

How often do you do water changes and how much do you change?
Do you gravel clean the substrate when you do a water change?

What sort of filter is on the aquarium?
How often and how do you clean the filter?

-------------------

Algae grows anywhere there is light and water. Add nutrients and it does really well. If you have too much light or too many nutrients, you get algae. If you don't have enough live plants, you get algae.

Adding more live plants can help.
Reducing lighting times can help reduce algae.
Reducing the amount of fertiliser can help.

Picture of the tank so we can see the algae and how it’s planted out? The algae is mostly gone, and when it was worse the water wasn’t green, that’s why I’m at a loss why it’s turning green now when it wasn’t when the algae was bad.

How many live plants are in the tank? Since upsizing to a 29 gallon I’ve been having problems with plants staying alive. They grew in my 20 gallon but don’t want to in the 29, nothing has changed besides tank size so not sure why. I have 3 that seem to be doing okay and a few stems that are hanging on but not really growing.
How long are the lights on for? A couple hours in the morning and a couple at night.
What plant fertiliser do you use and how often do you use it? Haven’t used one.

How often do you do water changes and how much do you change? Once a week. Typically a little more than 1/4 or half. Have done a bit more since the water turned green yo try to get rid of it.
Do you gravel clean the substrate when you do a water change? Yes, I have a gravel vacuum that attaches to a faucet.

What sort of filter is on the aquarium? Penguin, don’t recall the rest but sized for my tank.
How often and how do you clean the filter? Once a month at least.

If you don't have enough live plants, you get algae. Before I learned more, when we started with fish several years ago, we had fake plants and the light was on all night with no algae problem.

Adding more live plants can help. I would love to add more but don’t want to throw money out the door with them dying on me.
