@Colin_T … so this is the pet store mutt… curious is my assessment is correct…

Initially I was worried about Ich, since I had that in a tank before… but I am noticing excess mucus on the mutt… I’m hoping, and assuming, that it was exposed to hard alkaline water at the pet store, and this is the cause of the excess mucus… I’m hoping, that it doesn’t have anything more, wrong with it, that a couple weeks in my neutral Ph, soft water, can’t cure… thoughts anyone???

BTW… bonus shot of F-1

OMG, they look like they been trough a shredder... I would be mad to receive fish that are nipped like that.

top one came from a semi local pet store... the bottom one just arrived yesterday

I just commented on that on the F1 thread, didn't realise you had asked it here :)

The yellow angelfish is covered in excess mucous. It's from something in the water irritating the fish. This can be from poor water quality (ammonia, nitrite or high nitrate), incorrect pH, medications, plant fertiliser, or poisons/ chemicals from outside the tank getting into the water.

If it had cream, white or grey patches on part or parts of its body, then I would say it's got an external protozoan infection like Costia, Chilodonella or Trichodina. However, because the fish is completely covered in excess mucous, it's a water quality issue.

Apart from the excess mucous and slightly frayed fins, the fish doesn't appear to have any external diseases but could still have intestinal worms or gill flukes. Monitor over the next few days and post pics if it gets worse.

Treatment involves cleaning the tank and filter, assuming they haven't been done in the last few days. If the water is good and the filter and substrate clean, the mucous should clear up in 24 hours without anything else needing to be done.
