29 gallon tank ideas!

Sooo if you have any favorite more uncommon fish that would work for the 29 that would be great lol

The nearest thing to uncommon in my tank is Microdevario kubotai. I bought the last 6 in the store in May and I finally got some more a couple of weeks ago. But tiny fish like these are not to everyone's taste.

I know earlier you had said that 6 ottos would be ok. Would it be ok if there were 6 ottos and maybe 10 panda Cory’s too? I’ll try and just do 2 kinds of tetras so I could have all the other fish too.

Since otos and cories occupy different parts of the tank and eat different food, they should be OK together. But if someone who knows better than me says no, go by what they say.

I've just looked up M. kubotai on that site. Mine a more yellowish green than the photo on there, and I now have 19 of them not just 8 to 10. (I got another 15 but 2 died in the quarantine tank)

No problem, I am more than willing to comment on any fish species, as are other members.

Cories and otos are fine together. While cories need as many as you can handle, so to speak, otos are somewhat different. I had five in my 90g tank--three originals and then suddenly two more a tad smaller appeared. I could it in front of that tank for an hour, and never see 1 oto.

Heterocharax virgulatus is another of the newer tetras, here's some info that is reliable. It mentions tight aggregate shoaling, so this is one that a few more would be preferable, say 15. A real shining beauty from the description.

Thank you they are very beautiful fish I will probably get about 15 of them like you said. Could I also do another school of toucan tetras? Also maybe about 15 they are also relatively small or do you have another recommendation that will look good with the Heterocharax virgulatus? Sorry for asking again but how many of the panda Cory’s can I have? I know 6 ottos would be good and about 15 of the two schooling fish but how many Cory’s. I think someone said but I can’t find the post

Would it be ok to have 48 fish in a 29 gallon tank assuming I get 12 Cory’s? It seems like a lot but I feel like with frequent maintenance it would be ok? And what about the thing I posted above

Tucanoichthys tucano. Yes, this should work well. Fifteen, good.

Panda cory, a group of 12-15 would be my aim in this sized tank.

You need to be clever here, as the pandas need a bit of water current, but the other fish do not. It is doable, I achieved this with the internal Aqueon Quiet Flow filters, the smallest size in one of the back corners aimed down the back length of the tank, so when it hits the opposite end wall it will reverse with minimal strength. My pandas loved to play in this, but the other fish were not bothered by it.

Photo is my 29g when running as an Amazon Blackwater habitat. Sponge filter here, as minimal flow needed. This is the tank that won Tank of the Month. I had groups of Corydoras pygmaeus (you can see a few on the sponge filter), Paracheirodon simulans, Hyphessobrycon amandae, Carnegiella strigata, Nannostomus eques. The cories were fry from previous spawning in another tank, the pencilfish were getting old by this time. I added to these fish species in early 2022 when a local store had a wild caught shipment.

Thank you so much! Happy to here that I can have the toucans! I will try to make the bottom part of the tank have a bit more flow for sure! Is it just that one sponge filter? Your tank is beautiful great selection of fish! Would a hang on the back filter be powerful enough?

Thank you. I used a dual sponge filter in all my tanks up to 40 gallons, except when the 40g housed the 40 cories, I found the CO2 rise during the night bothered them, so I increased the surface disturbance with the small internal filter (which was just a sponge and small motor, nothing else). But the quiet water fish in the other tanks did well with just the sponge.

Do not use a HOB filter with these fish, it is way too much. The ones I found and liked are pictured. The third is the dual sponge, connected obviously to an air pump.

Thank you so much for all the help! I will defiantly have to post picks when the tank is finally done but not sure how long that’s going to take! I’ll check out the filters and I will defiantly not use a HOB filter from now on.

Found the filter on Amazon. They have a few different options just for the size of the tank. I’ll do the 30 gallon but will it be too strong? Sorry for all the questions they are a bit stupid lol but you can never be to sure.

I had a 10g size in my 3-foot 33g. I had a 40g size in a 70g for a time, then after I moved and downsized I used this in my 40g cory tank (pictured below, the filter and heater are in the rear corner). For a 29g, considering the fish, I would probably use the 10g filter, certainly no larger than the 20g size.

Ok perfect! Glad I asked otherwise I would have gotten the 30 gallon. I am going to probably get an adjustable heater for the tank so I can find a good temperature that is good for all the fish. If that’s good
