I found this rock at the beach and I wanted to know if it was safe for a fish tank. It kinda looks like something you would use for a house (like concrete or something similar, doesnt feel like concrete though) and it kinda looks like its fully natural. Thoughts?

if it's fizzing it is not safe for the aquarium...it would alter the ph

Limestone is fine to use in aquariums that contain fishes that like a pH above 7.0 (swordtails, platies, guppies, mollies, rainbowfish, goldfish, Rift Lake cichlids).

If you have tetras, gouramis, Corydoras, angelfish or other acid water fishes, then don't add it to the tank.

Limestone is made from calcium carbonate and will raise the pH of water. If you have enough limestone in water it can raise the pH to 8.5.

I agree with the calcareous rock raising the PH, GH and KH but isn’t it when the PH reaches a more alkaline level that PH rise would start to level out?

I wanted to put some Seiryu Stone in my new 75 gallon tank. I took a 5 pound piece of the stone and placed it in a 5 gallon bucket with 2.5 gallons of water in it.

I tested the PH, GH and KH every second day for 2 weeks.

Tap water parameters using the API liquid testers

PH: 7.0
GH: 1 drop
KH: 2 drops

After the 2 weeks with no water changes I had these readings below

PH: 7.4
GH: 3 drops
KH: 4 drops

The PH went from 7 to 7.4 by the 8th day and by day 15 it was still at 7.4 on both PH tests.

Yes. There is a limit to how much leaches out and it does reach a point of equilibrium where it stops leaching at the new “natural” pH.

You could put it in water and see if it stops fizzing and test the water before and after to see how much it may have raised the pH. Really depends on what fish you have and what pH they prefer.

You need two buckets, both filled with the same amount of water. Put the stone in one bucket and leave just water in the other. The second bucket is the control - that shows what the water will do with nothing added. Test both buckets for pH, GH and KH after 7 days. Compare the two sets of readings - if they are not the same, the differences are due to the rock.

I dont think I will use it, even if it is safe I dont have that much room for it. Thanks to everyone for the advice
