Hello. Platies are very hardy and pretty fish. This is a very nice male. You may want to consider adding two or three more females, so just the one isn't constantly harassed by the male.

Hi, How can you tell it’s a male? Thanks.

Hello gwand. Without going into a long description, the top photo of the male shows two, smaller, fins on the underside of the fish. The female has two bottom fins that are much larger and kind of in the shape of a triangle.

It’s the anal fin that’s different, not the ventrals. It’s a single fin.

Hello. However you'd like to describe the difference, the male's under fins are much smaller.

The ventral fins are not smaller.

In an adult male the anal fin - the single fin underneath the body right in front to the tail - is modified to a rod shape. It's called a gonopodium and is what the male uses to deliver sperm packets into the female.
The anal fin of a female looks like a normal fan shaped anal fin.

The problem here is only one "under fin" is a gonopodium, a modified and pointy anal fin.

This reminds me when I asked a question about salt in tank water. Strike two for me but at least I understand the answer to this particular question.😉
