im confused..at firstthis fish looked identical to my Dempsey. Then started to look more like my convict. Now it's got red fins and I'm so baffled as what it is now..any ideas?.. ty.
 
Can I change my answer? It could be Mesoheros festae, one of the most vicious cichlids.

Do the stripes ever fade to leave just a row of black spots?

Or… Can you get a picture from the side showing the face?
 
Started out lookin like the dempsy I have. Weird..didnt have red fins till recently..not real mean. Had to pull the firemouth. He was pickin on everyone..except the pike who is gettin huge quickly.good to know ty

Just stripes but the same tail spot as the depcy.
ckin on everyone..except the pike who is gettin huge quickly.good to know ty

Also have a black diamond who keeps them all in check.
