I got a new 10 gallon tank! What do I put in it?

A 10 gallon tank is certainly not large but it is fine for a dwarf gourami. It’s not large enough for multiples- males can be especially nasty to each other. Honey gourami have a more docile reputation (a 10 is still small for multiples). I’ve kept them with chili rasbora and had no problems.……excuse me if I am not on the thread for a few days I will be mourning my future dwarf gourami
What’s more commonly done is to find your tap’s parameters and choose fish that will thrive in it. That being said, it’s much easier to make soft water harder than the reverse, unless you have a reverse osmosis filter or collect rain water to mix with your tap. If your water is medium hard, most soft water fish can adapt to it. It may prevent them from breeding in some cases, but that’s usually not the aim of a community tank.
The reason why people stay away from DGs is that they are very prone to a disease and most all have them... I was going to do one but stopped my self when I learned about the disease.
I see. I’ve not kept them since I was a kid over 40 years ago and recall their being long-lived. I guess the stock is different now.

But yes, only if you have hard water.
Note: I have a 10 gallon and I have decided that no hard water fish is suitable for it so in the future, I'll turn it into a rabbit snail breeding tank.

@Honey Fish California has hard water so a small group of male guppies or slightly larger group of Endler's Livebearers would do

You cant really say a whole state has hard water... I know in my state there are different areas (even in the county) with different water hardness...
