Is history repeating itself?

They can, but on their terms. They're probably looking out while you look in thinking "Why can't this person get the set up right so we don't have to look at each other when we don't want to!"
There's no reason why you can't - it's just being creative and figuring out how. Are the caves too big? Can they see into them from other caves? Are the sightlines broken? Where are the rocks placed....
I do have a lot of ferns and rocks that break up sight lines BUT the caves are a bit big... I think I was over estimating the size of what they were going to be when buying... I thought they would be around 2-3 inches when buying but their at an inch only... And I dont want to move the rocks around while they are in there... Too risky...

I've kept these fish a couple of times over the years and I discovered they like small caves; so narrow that you'd wonder how a male and female could possibly both fit inside to breed. But breed they did, the male guarded the eggs, then the fry became free swimming and were promptly eaten by the other fish :(

The last time, I used sections of 3/4 inch wide plastic piping siliconed to pieces of slate to weight them down. The male only just fit inside with the eggs.

I shoyld definitely make the caves smaller... When the 10 gallon is cycled amd I get a heater for it I will move them to the 10 gallon to re arrange the caves and make it smaller... (Smaller caves are definitely wayyyyy easier to make!

I do wonder what genders I have... Im thinking that I do have a male and female but I am just not sure

I'm not going to try to sex them, I will leave that to those on here with the modern methods. But I will say there seems to be a significant difference in size with these two fish, which could be a problem. How large do you expect them to get, in the olden days they usually only got to 2-2.5 inches in length

I'm expecting that, if one is a male, one will be 3 inches and then the other if its a female to be 2.5... Everywhere I read said that males reached 3in while females could reach 2.5
