hello i think i caught ick early on my guppy i have 8 female guppies and 15 guppy fry in a 20 gallon tank. one of them looks like to have a white bump. i ordered the api ick medicine now i’m not sure what to do because the guppy fry are in a breeding container that floats in the 20. i know i need to treat it but scared the medicine will hurt the guppies any advice?

Can't tell what it is due to not being in focus.

If you haven't added anything new to the tank in the last month, it is unlikely to be white spot.

Medications do harm adult and baby fish. Some medications will also kill baby fish.

If you want to treat white spot without using chemicals, simply raise the water temperature to 30C (86F) and keep it there for 2 weeks, or at least 1 week after all the white dots have gone. The heat will kill the parasites and the fish won't be harmed by chemicals.

Try to insulate the back and sides of the tank with sheets of polystyrene foam (available from pet shops to go under the base of tanks). Have a coverglass on top of the tank too, to trap heat.

Measure the water temperature at the opposite end of the tank to the heater. And measure the temperature of the water, do not go off a digital stick on thermometer that sits on the outside of the glass.

---------------------
Before raising the water temperature, do the following.

Wipe the inside of the glass down with a clean fish sponge.

Do a 80-90% water change and gravel clean the substrate. The water change and gravel cleaning will reduce the number of disease organisms in the water and provide a cleaner environment for the fish to recover in.
*NB* Make sure any new water is free of chlorine/ chloramine before it is added to the tank.

Clean the filter. Wash the filter materials/ media in a bucket of tank water and re-use them. Tip the bucket of dirty water on the garden/ lawn. Cleaning the filter means less gunk and cleaner water with fewer pathogens.

Increase surface turbulence/ aeration to maximise the dissolved oxygen in the water.

if i just assumed a white mark was ick and not just her scales than i’m sorry for wasting your guys time

just raise the temperature for a couple of weeks. If it is white spot, that will treat it. If it is something else, then the spot will still be there in a few weeks and we can try to work out what it is.
