What’s a safe colored sand for aquariums?

My axies are blending into the off white sand. I would prefer blue or green sand, maybe black, for if & when I relocate them to another tank. An axie breeder told me she uses Crayola, but I can‘t find it locally & the shipping is steep.

I have black sand in my aquarium bought at the lfs. I think it was called Black Diamond and was $10 for the small size bag. It’s very fine and my corys love it.

Any objections to this, or is this what you're calling 'off-white'?

I am familiar with the product. A big bag came with my betta, a used system I found on Craigslist. This is a blasting medium. Not sure, it may be quartz. I understand axies ingest some substrate while eating, so I have concerns. No idea if they’re valid. I also use Black Diamond for my albino cory cats.

You could always go bare bottom or use large slate floor tiles rather than sand. It is easier to clean up after them, if using floor tiles avoid the shiny ones and go for the natural untreated slate....ice skating Axies are not good, they have lousy brakes

Thanks, I will give that serious thought. Could always put tank on something colorful

The recommended alternative to a sandy bottom is either a bare one or slate tiles....another thing about using slate tiles, keep them whole and cut to size so that they fit snuggly inside the aquarium bottom so that they do not move about and potentially break the glass

Appears to be a UK product. Per quick Google. A type of black gravel comes up at Petco for US. Hearing gravel not good for axies.
See what comes up with Limpopo sand, there may be a different manufacturer, failing that some dark play sand will do, one of the more natural dark colours....just ensure its washed really really well before putting it into the aquarium and if doing it with the Axies in-situ, get a 2 litre water bottle, wash out really well, cut the bottom off, turn upside down into the water and hover what was the neck of the bottle over the bottom about 2" off and very very slowly pour the sand through the bottle. It should cut the clouding down to almost zero
