Goldfish is swimming sideways and lethargic. Its my neighbors tank and i cleaned it and have it in a cup with some water to keep it away from their two other goldfish. Its too slow to feed peas and barely swimming, just laying on its side. The tank was disgusting so i can probably blame the lethargic behavior on ammonia. What should i do to help it?

Unfortunately, he looks at deaths door. There is not much I would imagine you can do for him at this point. Clean water and solitude to reduce stress is all I would recommend. I see no point in meds or anything.

I figured as much, i just feel terrible for the family it belongs to because there are multiple kids. Hopefully the cleaner water can help it.

There is a lot to feel terrible for here. The fish looks as if he likely has not been taken care of whatsoever. Small, pale, and huge eyes indicating likely stunting etc. With 3 standard goldfish, the tank would need to be fairly large too. Most try to keep these in small tanks. These regular goldfish are often insanely hardy and can live many years with absolute horrid treatment. This poor guy was found dying in a filthy tank. Unfortunately, the fish is a living thing too and deserves decent care and a clean home. It is not my place, but I would be the one to step in and gently educate them on fishkeeping and care. Direct them to this site or other resources if you can. It may help them along.

Did you dechlorinate the new water when you cleaned the tank?

After telling them what had happened, they decided to give the tank and all the fish to me. Im going to do my best to take care of them, and the sick one is being quarantined right now in clean water. I dont know what else to do but hopefully it gets better in the good water in a couple days.

The fish ended up dying, sadly. I dont know how to delete the post but its no longer a concern. Rest in peace pheonix

Fish in that condition nearly never recover. There wasn't anything you could do for him. You tried. RIP. Hope the others have a decent home and life.
