Just collected some rocks from the beach that i'd like to use in a fresh water tank. I know you shouldn't just chuck them in as they are so what's the process in cleaning them and making sure they're safe to use in a tank?

Did they come from a harbour where boats move around?
If yes, put them in a bucket of tap water and see if an oily film appears on the surface. If it does, then you don't want to use them.

If there is no oil film on the surface of the water, rinse them under tap water and add them to the tank.

They came from this little cove at Cape Schanck so don't think there's many boats that come near it. I'll chuck them in a bucket of water and see what happens! Thanks Colin.

Yeah, I have successfully used rocks from the beach in the past. Scrub them and rinse them; if you're still worried you can boil them for 15 minutes.
