So... Today I went out to my LFS to have a look at some hardscaping materials and plants... Wound up finding a lot more than that. Didn't get any decor from there, though... Far too expensive. £25 for a stripped piece of wood may have put me off.

But anyway, we had a look at the fish they had there and I started squealing out loud at their current stock. Black Venezuelan corydoras!! Only one of them, and a little expensive, so I'm going to keep in touch for when they get some more in. Now... Onto the main part of this: upside down catfish!! There were only two in the tank, so again I'm hoping to keep in touch with the owner for when they get another couple in, as I'd really like to keep a few more.
On top of this I got six female guppies in order to kick off my 54L guppy tank project.

The second half of the trip was heading to the Pets at Home chain, where we picked up a small 12L tank to eventually set up as a quarantine tank. Found some java moss and salvinia auriculata and decided that, since my duckweed order has been delayed by over a week now, I might as well go ahead and get it. So now I've more or less got the 54L tank set up.

Currently looks pretty scraggly, but I'm hoping that it'll wind up looking much nicer as time goes on...
For now, I'm quarantining the upside down catfish with the female guppies since I won't be able to get the proper quarantine tank set up until I get a heater for it.

Their names are Mr. Strange and Mr. Backwards! Don't ask which is which because I've already forgotten!

He's the tank right now. Again, quite scraggly but I feel like it'll eventually come together.

Will do! Was feeling super hopeless recently but I've pulled myself together and it's starting to take shape! Slowly...
That feeling in normal when setting up a new tank. Had that feeling about my 20g long until it finally came together. :)

Congratulations! You have a promising new tank (and wonderful new additions).
Thank you!
I know you said you were having trouble finding hardscape, but you really need more of it to complete the tank.
Oh definitely, do you have any general ideas? All I've got right now is the chunk of bogwood that was sat in my cupboard for months... Again, the £25 price tag for the wood that I saw in my LFS turned me away from picking up anything today...

You could try collecting naturally. Do you live by any forests/bodies of water?

LFS’s hideously overprice their driftwood for some reason, probably supply and demand.

Does your LFS carry dragon stone? I’m able to get a decent price on DS at my LFS. (They usually charge per pound)

DS will also compliments the black substrate and the driftwood.

I don't really live within reasonable distance to either, so I might be at a hard push to find my own anyway...
And, I think they do! But they charge by the kilogram, and since all the chunks of it are much heavier than 1kg, it racks up to some astronomical price in the end. I'll have a look around to see what I can get my hands on.

Hm, ok. If you can collect naturally, look for “hardwood”, not softwood. (You can Google a list of hardwoods and softwoods and how to tell them apart if you like)

Also don’t collect decaying wood as that will rot in your tank very quickly. (So will softwood)

You can also get smooth river stones which are typically much cheaper.

Ah, thank you!
