I rescaped my tank last weekend and in doing so I took out all my driftwood. It was redmoore wood that was in my old 6 foot tank from before I moved house, I initially had more in there but it was very obviously causing me problems so removed it but thought the other piece of wood was ok and was blaming my algae woes on my tapwater which is high in nitrates and phosphates (and other nutrients known to cause algae).

But since taking the wood out I have had negligable algae. In the tank before I had very established plants including very fast growing stem plants (weeds) but would still get steady algae growth in a couple of days, after 6-7 days I would have to scrape and scrub every surface for black brush, brown, green, green fuzz and staghorn but now I have a tiny bit of brown algae on the glass right at the substrate level but not much.

Because of these previous issues I kept my lighting at 60% for 6 hours a day but I am tempted to increase it to 70% for 7 hours and maybe even 80% for 8 hours but wondered what people thought?

Just take it slow and steady and monitor the results. In a new tank I increase by 5%. If there is no visible algae in 2-3 days I increase it again. As soon as I see algae I turn it back down to the previous level and that is usually where it stays..
Of course I am not known for my patience a week may be better than a couple of days ;)

Cool thats a good idea - I'm going to start with increasing the light, then increasing the time as I will need to change the timer on the Co2 too.
