My mom has been growing semi aquatic plants in a 20l vase for years. Recently we went away and the plant died. So I set about aquascaping and decided to do a full underwater setup of the vase.

I am wondering what I could stock in the 5 gal any suggestions would be great.

Happy day,

Cherry shrimp would look great in there. Painted red/fire red...something along those lines.
 
I'm currently looking at plants and the problem si there are too many choices.
not sure which anubius to get as there are like 9 different kinds listed. or if monte carlo will even grow okay in a small tank.
 
Happy day...since this is a private chat that no one else will read, this is a sneak peek at a tank I built last week. Don't...show...anyone. I am working on the journal for it. That said, I am terrible with plants, but I went with Bronze Crypt Wendtii, java fern, red root floaters, Damn Duckweed, Subwassertang and Dwarf Sagittaria. I'd like to stress that this tank is a week old, and will have no filter, no pump, no ferts, no CO2. Its 9.6gl. The plan is to get a colony of blue dream shrimp, 1 oto, and perhaps a blue mystery snail or some type of nerite.

Happy day...yes they are. The 1 and 4 keys are on top of each other and I meant to type 4 instead of 1. Let this be a valuable lesson to all...when a person is not mentally equipped to type in lengthy plant names and does, other typos are likely to be apparent. I see that I also omitted a whole sentence about how my grandmother said that my tanks were beautiful because I have a beautiful soul inside and that it is much more important than what people see on the outside :)

You're in luck. Our December Tank of the Month contest will feature tanks sized at 16 gallons and smaller. You might consider entering that awesome tank.
 
Happy day....I think a requirement is that the tank have life in it, and all this has is a single snail that was hitchhiking on some plants. Happily, the snail has lived in this landscape devoid of life. In a month I'll get some blue dreams in there. Which would also look good in the original poster's tank, too.
 
My plants arrived so I set them up on the hard scape the anubius is the biggest one ive ever seen.

So im going to fill the tank do daily water changes for a week then move to every 3 days in the hopes of getting some bacteria going.
 
Shrimps are sensitive to ammonia & nitrite so check them every day till you are sure they are staying at zero. With live plants and only shrimps, you shouldn't see either.

I can't tell from the photos, but just to make sure - the anubias rhizome is above the substrate?

Yes the rhizome is above the substrates. And im gonna do water changes for next few days
