Just like my catfish threads, I'll be regularly posting photos of my barbs here.
I keep cherry barbs and recently some melon barbs.

First set here are my melon barbs, who are still juveniles and still developing the adult colouration. Ive got a group of 6 of them. Will see how they get along and how many males to females I have and perhaps get a couple more. Not very shy these guys, very active and inquisitive. Peaceful, though they do chase one another often, they still also group together.

My cherry barbs are a little shy, so often harder to get nice closeups of them.
I have 6, with one male and five females. My male is sometimes really pale pink-brown and other times he brightens up to a bright red patchy pink.
Theyre a very peaceful bunch, very content to chill in the plants

Thumbs up to all barbs but Tigers. Even then, those day glo ruby Tigers actually look great. If I see them ever again, one barb that was a favorite and I would raise them was the Arulius barb, one of those 4" barbs that was red white and blue, and males had long streamers on their dorsal fins. Showy, peaceful fish.

Tigers are pretty and all but they gotta be kept properly. Not an easy beginner fish lol

The melons are very peaceful fish, active too.

Wow the colors on both the melons and the cherries are awesome!!! It sounds like the personality of the melons especially make for an active tank that must be a lot of fun to watch!! Barbs are high on my list for what fish may be exciting for a toddler, what are your thoughts on that?

Cherries can be timid so may escape the notice of a toddler, but the active ones that aren't as shy would grab attention very well.
The melons are awesome if you can find them. Larger, get up to 3 inches, but super active and pretty peaceful. They like having other barb species and other schooling species around too. Mine are still babies so their full coloring isn't out yet, but I adore them.

NC do you want my Odessa? Theyre rubbish lol

Aww theyd probably do well with the other barbs too especially since its a cooler water tank too, but im sure maybe someone local to you would love yours if you dont want them.

Id recommend cherry barbs if you still wanted to try out barbs. Very docile. Gold barbs are really good too right after them.

Think I'm throw a load of danios in with them, or yeh, some other barbs. Odessas are all alone in a 63 gallon at the moment, and spend half their time in hiding. So probably need some dithers. Beautifully coloured fish though

Yeah dithers would be good for the barbs. My cherries can be shy. The melons are not though.

Some melon barb photos.
I'm down to 5 since one jumped during emergency housing, but I am getting more soon.
The first photo is definitely male, he is getting more black in his fins and more intense red.

So my total for melon barbs now is 12, I picked up 7 more. Big happy group.
The light hits my tank in the late morning and one of the melon barbs was playing in the light, showing off some fantastic coloring.

Most my cherry barbs are blind or near blind due to a recent incident, though. Still number 6 of them.
