Hi, I am getting a 48 gallon tank from a friend that is 48"x13"x14" (LxWxH) in dimension. I've attached a photo of it as it is at my friend's house. I was wondering what kind of fish you think would do well in a shallower tank such as this. I'm not overly interested in live bearers and do really like the smaller cichlids. I plan to keep it heavily planted and will be adding driftwood and rocks.

You could totally keep 2 pairs of any small cichlid. Apisto/Krib/Ram, especially since its so long and they are bottom dwellers.

What's your water hardness?

My water is on the harder side but I have a pair of local bred german blue rams that are doing fine in my 40 gallon. I don't have exact numbers right now.

Check your local water providers site.

What they deem hard may not be "hard" in terms of fish keeping. The numbers are important when it comes to keeping fish *longterm*

I had one of those in the past. My favourite fish by far, but no idea where I would find one near me.

I set about breeding them in tank like that. Didn't quite do it but had 6 in the tank and they got to the actively chasing stage. It was a lot of fun to watch.

You should get a nice group of small schooling fish. I have pearl danios (danio albolineatus) and love them. Glowlight danios (danio choprae) would also look great there.
