Hello! I am not great with this forum stuff, but I really cannot figure out what this fish is! We were given some more Tetras and some Guppies too. Amongst those was this strange fish. I’m not sure if I’m being stupid or if it is genuinely an unusual cross breed. Does anyone have any answers for me? Happy to answer any questions. Thank you!

Thank you! After typing White Cloud Mountain Minnow into Google Images, I think you may be correct! Do you know much about them? We were given them with tropical fish and it had been living in a tropical tank set up, but as far as I know, doesn’t it need to be in a cold water tank set up?

It does, they like it very chilly. They also need friends and quite a bit of room (they like zooming around). I'd recommend returning it unfortunately.

Yes, they are more of a cold water specie rather than tropical water temperatures.

They will survive in tropical temps but their lifespan will be shortened considerably as their bodies and metabolism will have to work harder to compensate for the warmer temperatures.

They are also a schooling species, meaning they don’t do very well on own or in very few numbers, 10 or 12 would be the minimum numbers imho.

I’ve never had WCMM and I think they’re pretty cool and have considered having some of them, just never got round to doing that!

Have a read on the link I sent on my first post, from website Seriously Fish which is a pretty decent website with mostly good information and care guide etc. That will give you more of an idea about them.

I had WCMMs back in the late 90s.Back then I don’t even think yer gold n Long Fin versions were available in the U.K.
I’m hoping to find a few long fins but they seem pretty thin on the ground at the moment. I’ll then top up the gang to ten+ with silvers as I don’t see the attraction of the golds at all.
If anyone hears of any long fins gimme a shout ...please.

I have some here along with a few CPD
Here are 6 raising up from their fry
