Hey all,
My tank is almost done cycling and my plants are doing great. And so is my brand new algae. I have been feeding the 4 fish in my tank once every 56 hours so I don't think its excess ammonia (plus I have like 8 swords) so I think its light. The lid that came with the "kit" I bought is like crazy strong. It blasts the crap out of my tank, but I can't find any exact watt number. Any recommendations for lights and lids for a standard 29 gallon tank? (I'm also going to steal a nerite from my friend so that might help).

What does the algae look like?

Sorry for the bad quality, I'm rocking an iPhone 7

So just turn down the time I have the lights on? I leave them on 10 hours a day, sometimes less.

It turns down the intensity of the light so it's not as bright.

On the subject of the time the lights are on, they should be on for the same length of time at the same time of day every day. And the room should be in daylight or the room light on for at least 30 munites before the tank lights turn on and for at least 30 minutes after the tank lights turn off. Fish expect the lights to be on at the same time every day; and it takes fish's eyes around half an hour to adjust to the tank lights going on and off. Having the room in daylight or electric light is like having a dawn and dusk on either side of the tank lights being on.

Yea I try and slowly tone down the lights as the day goes on. Makes it impossible to read any later than 8 o'clock hehe

I left mine on for the same time and turned down the intensity. Mine varies between 50 and 65% in 3 of the tanks. In the 4th its 100% but that one has a lot of surface plants.
