Hi there,

Woke up this morning to a these things floating on the very top of the water attached to the grass.... 130L long tank, pH 7.2, temp 27c, fishless planted cycle 1-2 weeks in, ammonia nitrites and nitrates all zero. A single stowaway snail being the only thing with a central nervous system in there... could they be her eggs? Mould? Some kind of algae? Heeelp.

Just looks like bubbles, perfectly normal for a new tank, and nothing to worry about. :)

Eek but they are inside bubbles- really hard to make out but can you see how they're sort of solid and stick out a bit?

Anyway I removed as many as I could and did a water change just in case lol.

Oh yes, now I sort of see it.

Still no idea though - I don’t think it’s eggs of any sort. The water changes as good thinking. :good:

Looks like some substrate powder floated up. Sometimes happens when freshly filling a tank.

It has been a few weeks and a few vacuums, and the substrate is black? I really thought they were eggs but can one snail lay this many overnight?? Lol.

Doubt it’s snail eggs as snails generally lay eggs on glass, plants and decor, anywhere really but not as bubbles on surface of water.

Could be a reaction from plants or possibly bubbles from filter, something like that maybe?

Not come across this exactly.

Is this an open tank?
No cover/lid

Hmm so weird no one has seen anything like it... i think they were attached to the plant fronds on the top but they did float off pretty easily when I moved the fronds. Tank has a lid.

I’m not sure what these are to be entirely honest.

Looking at pics, looks like some are bubbles and some are white eggs. Hard to tell really.

Remove as much as you can, using kitchen paper towels or a4 plain paper, lay paper flat on top of bubbles areas on water surface for few seconds and remove as soon as gets waterlogged. Paper soaks up bubbles and anything else, easiest method I know anyway. Repeat process until all is removed or to your satisfaction.

Might help anyway.

Never seen anything quite like it either. Are any of the plants in there new? Would you be able to get a photo of the plants from the side so we can see what they are?

My only other speculation is maybe some flower or seed pods, if a plant was grown emersed. Or perhaps just cross contaminated accidentally and wound up in the tank that way. I wouldn't be too alarmed by it, but I'd do as @Ch4rlie suggests to remove it too.

Woww thank you for this! I already scooped them out with a container and they scattered everywhere and then did a water change lol but what a nifty technique for future!

Did you get the plants from a chain store? Perhaps it's some of that stuff they pack plants in to keep them moist?

I added some new ones on the weekend, the Amazon sword in the middle is new.

Today spotted a little jelly sack of what MUST be eggs, and they do look the same but they are contained in a jelly not floating on the surface and, there aren't as many lol so... the surface stuff must have been something else?

Yep, the jelly sack eggs are bladder snail eggs, not unusual or mystifying, the other stuff is new to me though!

Where did you get the plants from? Did you do any kind of washing of them before adding?
