Tank Size: 55 gallons
pH: 7.2
Ammonia: 0ppm
NO2-: 0ppm
NO3-: 5ppm
kH and gH: unknown
Tank Temp: 75 F
Fish Symptoms: All fish are occasionally scratching themselves on the plants (about once an hour). All other behavior is normal until a sudden death occurs.
Volume and Frequency of Water Changes: 10 gallon water change every week with Primo brand water (reverse osmosis filtered, no chlorine and according to the manufacturers quality report it has no detectable trace minerals, but calcium was added.)
Chemical Additives or Media Used: API Stress Coat used during water changes (dosed only for water added to tank), Flourish plant fertilizer once a week, Stability bacteria once a month. UV filter, Carbon filter. Water vacuum used on substrate during water changes.
Tank Inhabitants: Had, up until this past week, 3 Gardneri Killifish males, 2 Gardneri Killifish females. Still in tank, 7 Mollies, 7 Neon Tetras, 5 Corys, 1 Aphyosemion Australe Killifish male, about 10 Mystery Snails.
Recent Additions: Added a large clipping of Ludwigia Repens Rubin from my 20 gallon tank to the 55 gallon two weeks ago (no problems in the 20 gallon tank)
Exposure to Chemicals: None other than what is normally added (listed above).
I have a 55 gallon, well planted, fresh water tank. I set it up just over a year ago and everything has been fine up until this past week. My 5 beloved Gardneri Killifish have all died over the past week. When the first two died, a male and female, I did a 18 gallon water change (the water parameters were the same before the change, except that the NO3- was at 10ppm). Then two days later the other adult male and female died. I did another 10 gallon change. Now 4 days later and my baby Gardneri male is upside down and gasping for breath. Last night he was swimming in the current created by the carbon filter like it was resistance training but would break off and circle the tank, I thought nothing of it. He is now separated in a hospital tank that I filled with the water from my 20 gallon tank that is having no issues and has the same pH as the 55 gallon tank. It does not look like he is going to make it.
I'm afraid for my other fish, what is going on here? They have all been treated for parasites and bacterial infections before they were added to the 55 gallon tank. Is it possible I have over planted? Why are only the Gardneri's dieing!?
Edit: The baby Gardneri has passed away Any ideas for what is happening?
