New to fish keeping.

Also, neutral colored sand is better than white, white will stress the fish and they will be pale:)

I will return this bag and purchase some normal sand tomorrow! Do I have to clean the sand? Also will the plants I bought be ok for the night?

Sand is usually dusty so it will need washing. Put some in a bucket and run water into the bucket. Give it a good swirl round then empty the dusty water and repeat until the water is just about clear. Then wash the next batch of sand.
Do this before setting the tank up as it can take some time depending on how dusty the sand is.

The plants will be OK overnight in a bucket of water.

Hey all,
I'm looking to get a 29 gallon tank with 2 angelfish, 4 or 5 platys, and maybe some cory cats? After doing some research I have come to the decision of putting live plants in my tank. On that note, I'm uncertain of the required temperature, lighting and compatible plant/fish species. The tank I'm looking to buy is 18 inches tall, which according to my research, is fine for Angelfish. I live in a hot desert so maintaining warmer water should not be difficult as well. I'm going to be purchasing the majority of my equipment and fish from Petsmart. Any advice/tips would be greatly appreciated! Stay safe!

you should google it.

Ok so I have gotten my sand, cleaned it and layered it. The substrate is about 2 inches thick. How should I go about filling up my tank? Keep in mind I'm goin to attempt a silent cycle.

There it is!

Also any reason I would have 0 ppm of Ammonia, Nitrite, and Nitrate? Do I just have perfect water? I filled the tank half way dechlorinated, planted, filled it all the way up dechlorinated and put the recommended amount of bacteria water in it. I also got a better filter, in the form of the Penguin Power Filter 150 with the bio-wheel. The tests were performed about 4 hours after I set up my tank.

Did you add any ammonia? You need to add ammonia to start the cycle

That explains it lol, how do I know if the silent cycle is done/if anything is happening?
Test it. If you see nitrates in your water, that means that your cycle is happening. Ammonia and nitrite should be zero while nitrate should have some number above zero.

Wait about a week and see if the plants are showing obvious signs of growth, if they are growing well you can start slowly adding fish

Speaking of adding fish, I'll be monitoring my temperature but its at like 82, is that fine for most fish or a little too hot?
