I’ve had a pair of firemouths for about a month now and I’m not sure if hey are males or females, over the past few days I have noticed their colours brighten up and they have started going side by side and flaring up and swimming in a circle together, they don’t go to attack eachother though, is this a sign it’s a male and female getting ready to lay eggs or is it just normal Firemouth behaviour. Thanks

Could be breeding signs or it could be two males displaying to each other. Could you post pictures?

Possible photos of the fish?
Sounds like male and female trying to pair off or two males displaying to each other like @Wills said.
Nice to see you again :)

Seems like they are pairing. As far as I'm concerned, it is hard to sex fire mouths. The males are bigger though, so if one is out-growing the other, the bigger is the male.

That first picture is great! Really shows how the defense mechanism works!

I think you have a male and a female, you can see that one of them has points to the dorsal, anal and caudial fins and the other does not. The presumed female is looking a bit nipped which if they are displaying is normal but I dont think it changes the over all shape of the fins.

Thankyou for the advice, also on the sizes of the firemouths I am not sure on the ages of them both but I believe they are both young, one Firemouth is quite a bit bigger than the other but not sure if it’s because one is older.
