Right now I am looking for rocks and stone for mu 29 gallon tank. I don't want anything that will alter the water parameters too much. But ohko dragonstone is pretty expensive at about $35 for a 9 lb bag. Wich comes out to about 5 rocks. Any suggestions?

I already have a nice piece of grapevine I plan on anchoring to pieces of rock.

Do you live by any beaches or rivers where you can collect any rocks that you'd be confident haven't been polluted?

Not really. Almost everything has runoff from the street, it seems like.

Look on Craigslist or eBay. You can find cheap smooth river stones.

Dragon Stone is my personal favorite though.

The safest is usually river rock, which are various sized pebbles to stones of usually granite rock that have been worn smooth with years of river tumbling. I get mine from a local landscape supply, a 3 gallon pail of whatever I select from the pile is only 75 cents. Photo below is of my 20g with quite a lot of this river rock.

I put some rocks and slate in there that I had in some of my other tanks and it looks ok with the grapevine. I will just have to keep an eye out for a good deal on dragonrocks.

Watch with grapevine btw. It can be toxic and rots very quickly in aquariums

It is the zoomed brand, so I hope it is fine. They sandblast it to remove all outside pieces and fragments, and I had it in boiling water, then let it soak for most of the day. It has some nice coloring that really darkened once it was in the water.
