Can someone ID this fish for me please? I saw it at my LFS:

It says on the tank “Blue Angle Ram”. Not sure if that is the actual name of the fish. (As there were a lot of other species in that tank) What are the requirements for said species?

They are just German Blue rams and require the same parameters. They are selectively bred from bad genetics that have created a deformity,

Whether or not you agree with this is another thing. :)

Agree it is yet another variety of the common or blue ram, Mikrogeophagus ramirezi, requiring identical parameters/aquascaping/tankmates, etc, as Kevstar stated.

Selective breeding colour variants is one thing, but when it comes to deliberately deforming the fish to create "balloon" or similar forms, that is animal cruelty and should not be encouraged. Never buy them, and tell your local store why. This deformity does affect the fish's ability to function, and regardless of whether the fish can or cannot feel "pain," it is still inhumane.

Wait, people make them have bubbles under their skin? The ones there didn't have these "bubbles".

No, these dont look like them... the ones at my LFS has gold pretty much wherever the blue was in this photo:

(mikrogeophagus-ramirezi)

I will upload photos of them tomorrow morning.

Not bubbles, balloon shaped body created by selectively breeding fish with rounder bodies than usual. Like balloon mollies. Having their organs all squished up in that shortened body shape is not good.

There are so many variants of ram these days. Not just the various colours (normal, electric blue, gold, etc) but the balloon body shape and extra large fins in all the colours as well.

Gold balloon ram? Will be interesting to see photos of this always hard to ID off a common name

Will provide photo in the next 20 - 30 minutes. :)

That's defiantly not a Balloon ram. Its Just your average German Blue that is a little heavy on the gold colouring around the front end of the fish. Usually you will have blue speckles in the gold but its not that unusual for the colours to vary considerably.

A nice looking fish at that :)

@Byron, so this wont work for my tank?

Yep regular ram needs high temperatures low ph soft water and very low nitrates

I agree the pictured fish is a common or blue ram variety, species is Mikrogeophagus ramirezi, so no it will not do well in your tank because it needs 80F or higher temperature and you have neon tetras that cannot manage with this, as I have explained before I think, somewhere.

Ok - still planning on ordering some Bolivian Rams later down the road. :good:
