Hi,

So im just wondering, in my country exist something called "freshwater clownfish" as far as i know, there's no way clownfish can live in freshwater, and from my online research i couldnt find any study or at least explanation why clownfish can live in freshwater. I do some research in several big fish market in my city, and none of the seller there know about it, so apparently these "freshwater clownfish" only available in online store (see my attachment, its in Indonesian language tho). What do you guys think ? scam ? or fish cruelty ?

disclaimer : i didnt intend to buy those so called "freshwater clownfish". im just curious since i couldnt find any prove that clownfish can live in freshwater

apparently the buyer need to add fish salt for those freshwater clownfish, i didnt understand why they dont just buy the saltwater one

There is no freshwater species that resembles the saltwater clownfish. This is another case of confusion over common names. "Clown" can be part of the common name of fish like Clown Loach (one of the photos above is this fish), Clown Killifish, and who knows how many others. But none of these are in any way the marine clownfish.

I'm thinking its a scam? The photos are of marine clowns, not any of the freshwater "clown" type fish like the ones byron mentioned.

Yes when i googled fresh water clownfish using english the result are those fish clown loaches and clown killifish, but when i search fresh water clownfish using Indonesian language all i get is those ads. My friends insist fresh water clownfish exist, and yet there are not evidence clownfish can live in a fresh water. I think you guys are right, its probably a scam
