Hi everyone,

I’m new to fish keeping and have one new Betta,I bought the fish two days ago and it was sold as a Male Crowntail baby, however I have noticed a small white spot on belly between the two lower fins, which made me think maybe female (the fins also don’t look long enough to me, but what do I know ‍♀️) I did a little research and found out that males can grow a fake egg spot to trick other males, so how do I confirm the sex? I emailed the store I purchased the fish from and they have assured me it’s a baby Male. I will attach a pic, the betta’s body is 1inch in length. Your replies are much appreciated!

Hold a mirror up against the tank. If the betta flares, look it its gills. A male will have gills showing at the sides and underneath the head, looking like a beard. A female will only have gills showing at the sides.

Lovely crowntail, whichever it is :)

Ok I will give that a try, it does have a beard which is small but visible all the time, I can’t tell if its underneath so will definitely try the mirror.
Thank you, I’m really pleased with it, it’s in very good condition which is why I don’t want to question the seller too much or offend him.

Ok so the beard was definitely all the way to the bottom does that confirm Male or is there anything else I can check for?
