Hi all

I've recently set up my new planted tank, currently fishless cycling (only 3 days in), I have CaribSea substrate at the minute and was wondering if i should cap it? If i should would you recommend gravel or sand?

Thanks for your help
Dave

never mix different types of gravel because the fine stuff drops through the bigger stuff and it looks like crap. just have the one type of substrate.

No need to cap. The only time one should ever "cap" a substrate is if one has, dirt.

The "cap" keeps the soil from being stirred up and leeching excess nutrients into the water column.

Caibsea sand is inert, meaning it doesnt have any minerals or nutrients that will effect your water column. Capping it will just compress it more.
