You can try covering it with a board for now. One that is sealed since water will condense on it. They do sell hoods with lights but they are not cheap.

Coverglass made from 4-6mm thick glass, or Perspex.

Cut the coverglass lengthwise so each half of the tank has 2 pieces (4 pieces total). Put a small handle on the front piece of cover so you can lift it up to feed the fish and to get into the tank.

On the side with the filter, have one piece flush with the front of the tank and the second piece resting partly on the front piece so there is a gap for the filter.

I can’t I want to keep my current lights

You can build a lid as colin mentioned or just buy one.

A 55 is a common size and should be readily available and a glass lid should be in stock at any fish or pet shop

A glass lid with a hinge in the center will work with your lights.

Get a glass versa top at LFS. Usually with a 55 gallon it has the spacer in the middle so you can buy two that i think fit across if, if no spacer buy 1 longer versa top. There are also videos on line show you how to make your own, if your into that

My 55 came with 2 hoods so they are split.

I I visited my lfs before coming here, but their max size is 38x18 and my tank is a 55g

Well..... That would actually be too big. If you have a 55 gallon tank, you would need 2 separate lids. I want to say the size is 24x10, but messsure to be sure if I'm not remembering off the top of my head correctly.

I asked Petco and they said the opposite, “it’s too small for your tank, it won’t fit at all. This is meant for a 40g tank”

If you have a 55 gallon tank with a spacer in the middle then the ones that fit 20 long aquariums will fit a 55 you just need two of them.

This is absolutely true. The 20 long fit on the 55. I suggest measuring yourself and picking the right size instead of asking petco employees.

When I was buying a lid for my 55, the guy promised me it would not fit. And that it would only fit on a 20 gallon. Needless to say I bought 2 and they fit perfectly and it's on the tank now. The lid that said on the box that it fit a 55 was for a 75/90.

A lid for a 40 is bigger than one side of a 55.

A 40 lays across the whole tank and the divider is set inside the tank. A 55 has a divider that sits between the 2 smaller lids on each side.
