Someone will be able to give you some good advise on here but it might help if you could list a bit more info like

Whats your water parameters (ph and gh)
Tank sizes
How long have you been cycling your tanks for.

There may be a few occassions where you could get away without a filter i.e a heavily planted tank but id highly recommend you get one for the second tank. You need a filter so your media can grow good bacteria to break down harmful compounds such as ammonia, nitrites. This will probably be your problem but i will let more experienced fish keepers advise you.

Knowing the size of the tank you want to put them all in would be helpful - I'm guessing that if you think it would look overcrowded then it probably would be overcrowded.

You have two choices here - leave everybody where they are or possibly overcrowd them. Note that there were two factors that were different in this situation 1. Two tanks (probably treated pretty exactly or 2. two different kinds of fish. What happened was that only one kind of fish died - leading me to believe the guppies are probably handling the water much better than the molly's did - overcrowding may cause additional stress. On the otherhand if you come back and say you have a 10 gallon tank you have plenty of room to move the two groups together.

If you are planning on cycling a tank the first thing you need to buy is a test kit to get the basic readings. The ones most crucial for guppies and mollies are; Ammonia, Nitrites, Nitrates, PH. GH comes in a different kit and personally, for these fish, is probably not necessary - for some fish it's very necessary. You can do it with test tubes or test strips - the test tubes are far more accurate.

I assume you added SOME kind of water conditioner to get rid of the chlorine when you first got the fish. If not, you should us something like Prime to get rid of the chlorine and to help render any ammonia or nitrates less dangerous. If you use Prime - it's OK to leave them in the same tank.


For the future - one thing to know is that it's not the best to cycle a tank with fish in it - instead we use household ammonia (the kind without soaps or scents added) - the ammonia simulates the waste the fish and the food would normally produce if you were cycling the tank with a fish. It's not impossible to cycle a tank with fish in it but it can be stressful to the point of death especially for some fish.

Reduce feeding to once a day and do a 75% water change and gravel clean the substrate every couple of days.

Monitor the water for ammonia and nitrite and do a 75% water change any day you have an ammonia or nitrite reading above 0, or a nitrate reading above 20ppm.

Increase aeration/ surface turbulence to maximise oxygen levels in the water.
