I have a 10 us gallon tank with 5 neon tetras 4 platys 2 ottos and an ADF and one of my tetras has a discolored spot on him. When it first appeared he stayed in the back corner of the tank and didn’t eat or anything but now he swims with the other fish eats and is perfectly fine except for the discolored spot. I’ve been treating him Melafix and the first treatment made the spot smaller but after it got bigger and spread. I started treating him again today and I have had this happen with another fish but he didn’t die from the spot he died from being quarantined. So what is the spot and how do I fix it?

Hi and welcome to the forum :hi:

I’m sorry to hear of your difficulties, is there any chance of a photo or short 30 second video of the fish?

Any chance of a picture?

How long has the tank been set up for?
How often do you do water changes and how much water do you change?
Do you gravel clean the substrate when you do water changes?
Do you dechlorinate the new water before it's added to the tank?

How often do you clean the filter and how do you clean it?

The following link has information about what to do if your fish get sick. It's long and boring but worth knowing. I recommend printing it out and reading it in bed to help fall asleep. :)

On a separate note, frogs should be kept in a single species tank without fish for a couple of reasons.
1) The frogs will sometimes eat fish.
2) If the fish get sick from a disease, the medication used to treat the fish can kill the frog.

Here are a couple pictures but I’ll have to get a video tommorow because I had to turn off their light sorry they’re blurry

I’ve done tons of research about the ADF being in a tank with fish and it only eats fish that mess with them but teras and platys are peaceful and I only use medicines that are safe for both frogs and fish but thank you for the advice and I will read the link you gave me

Frogs are opportunistic predators and will eat anything that fits in their mouth. If the frog is well fed it is less likely to eat fish living in the same tank.

re: the neon and patches.
It looks like a couple of bites.

Neon tetra disease can look similar except the white patch appears as a single patch on the blue line and spreads rapidly across the body. Fish infected with neon tetra disease, stop fish eating and they die within 24-48 hours of symptoms first appearing.

If the fish is still eating, then monitor it over the next week. If it's a bite or several bites (probably from the frog), they should heal up in a week or so.

I have had several with that and they survived for quite some time. Nothing I tried helped. Just monitor and let him be if he’s doing well. Some of mine eventually developed necrosis and I euthanized them. This was months after the discoloration began. Good luck!
