Hello,

My corys have laid eggs!!!! I would like to know whether they are fertile or not. The eggs were laid on some floating Salvinia Minima/Water Spangles and I noticed them a few hours ago. I removed them and placed in a pyrex container with an air filter. I separated the eggs. You will see some dark streaks on some of them - these are the remaining roots that they were attached to.

I would love to know whether these are fertile! I also have some other questions if they are:

- can these be kept and hatched at room temp?
- research tells me that I should change 50% of the water each day, half tap water, half tank water. Is this correct?
- anything else I need to do?!

Pictures attached! If I shine a torch on them they have a opaque blob in the center. I assume this is the yoke?

Thanks!

You can't tell if fish eggs are fertile until several days after they have been laid when the developing embryo is more than a few cells in size. Wait a few days and see if any dark spots appear inside the eggs. :)

Thanks Colin. I want to know nowwwwwwwwww!!!! Fingers crossed. They've been moved to a container attached to the inside of the main tank with the air pump inside

ERMERGHERD there are little things moving inside!!!

I feel unprepared for offspring :(

Thank you! I'd better get ready! I'll see if I can get hold of fry food at my LFS

I love how you recommend to separate the sexes before trying to breed. I bet it works like a charm

One question: some websites say to separate the fry in a separate tank with a separate filter and heater. Would a breeder box/submerged tupperware (top above the surface with holes in the sides for water flow) and an added airpump be sufficient? I have a 10g tank but it's not set up, let alone cycled...

The fry are tiny and get out of holes so a separate tank/ plastic storage container is best. Set it up with water from the main tank, add a heater and small air operated sponge filter if possible. If you don't have a filter just add an airstone and have it bubbling away gently. You don't want too much water movement or the babies get knocked about.

Change half the water in the fry tank each day using water from the main tank. Keep the food small and provide food regularly throughout the day.

Thanks! So far nothing hatched but there are 5 that have eyed up and are moving yay!! The other 6, they remained white and last night I moved them to a separate container floating in the tank which then tipped over :(so I hoping that those ones really were infertile!).

The issue is that I'll be away for work from between 6 and 8 hours a day... can they go that long without food? Now I have baby fish and a border collie to worry about when I'm away!

Put a bunch of plants in the tank with the baby fish and they can hunt the infusoria on the plants.

Feed the babies before work and when you get home from work and at night before bed.

BABIES!! Two babies! I mean, two fry!! They are teeny tiny itsy bitsy. So exciting! I have some fry power food from Aquiarium Co-op and some bring shrimp eggs ready to start all courtesy of a local fish keeper
