Hi, i need some help treating a molly fish with a spot/zit looking growth on its tail.I have tried pimaflix & melaflix treatment x2,interpet anti internal bacteria and then 2x treatments of esha 2000 with no improvement. The fish is active swims normal and eats fine any ideas as to what the problem is ?
The tank (8g planted) has been up and running for a few years and water perimeters are perfect,i did recently change the filter from an internal to hob but used the old foam and bio from a cycled tank.Only other tank mate is a Chinese algae eater.
How long has it been growing on the fish for?
If it has been growing for a few weeks or a month then it is probably a tumour. But it could also be Lymphocystis, which is a stress virus. See link below for more info on Lymphocystis. http://edis.ifas.ufl.edu/fa181
If it is a virus then you can try feeding the fish more variety and include a liquid vitamin/ mineral supplement on some freeze dried or frozen but defrosted fish food. You need to give the vitamins every day for at least a month.
If it's a tumour there is no real cure other than cutting it off and hoping the wound doesn't become infected or the tumour grows back.
FYI, the fish in the photos is a male orange mickey mouse platy
Thanks Colin,The fish was in a bigger community tank with another platy but they kept fighting so i moved it to another tank 6+ weeks ago.I noticed the spot not long after so you may be onto something with the stress thing also only fed flake food since it was moved so i will try adding some variety and look into getting some vitamins.
