my son was given a male betta for his birthday in July. for the most part, we've had it easy keeping him. had him in a one-gallon tank on my son's desk. now his grandpa gave him a 20-gallon tank for Christmas. I set it up and everything was fine and dandy, mr.fish likes the tank but when I woke up this morning(day 3 after setting it up) it was really cloudy. I don't know if its because of the decorations or if the filter isn't working properly. any advice is helpful.

the first picture is yesterday when I first put him in there, the second picture is what it has looked like all day today. I washed everything before I put it in there so I'm not sure why it got cloudy like that.(also I'm sorry the pictures are so big I want you all to be able to see my issue.)

Do a small water change about 25 to 50%, What water conditioner are you using? Eg Seachem Prime.
You tank isnt cycled?

Also I think your tank needs plants including floating ones silk are ok but live are better.

we're getting plants next week, what is in there is what my son was given. and we use the aqueon betta bowl plus conditioner(we have 2 bottles i'm trying to use it all). I didn't even know what cycling was until tonight.

You can actually buy the larger bottles of water conditioner. The "betta" water conditioner isn't any more special for bettas. The best IMO is Prime water conditioner but I also like Aquasafe because it works and is a reasonable price for the amount of water changes you can get out of it. And also if you are getting plants please be careful where you get them from. If you get them from a pet store tank make sure it isn't infested with snails or have any eggs on it. Since your new tank isn't cycle those nasty pests can wreak havoc. Quarantine any plants you get if you are not sure, don't want any nasty parasites hitchhiking into your betta's new home!

If you dont want the snails or are worried about it I would do a bleach dip for the plants. If you dont like the snails why put them in QT tank?
