I saw this fish in the LFS. It's in with mollies and rainbow bosemanis, but didn't look like either. I asked and was told it is a bosemani. Why is it so much thinner than the others and why does it not have the line around each scale that the other bosemanis had. Also, the eyes are much larger than the other bosemanis. Is it just a different kind of bosemani perhaps? I'm just curious. Thank you!

Hmm. That is kinda like a juvenile boesmani, perhaps a female.

In fact am wondering if its a juveniale female Melanotaeniidae fredericki rather than a boesmani.

But am not certain.

Don't forget when they are at LFS, they are stressed and perhaps skinneir than normal so their colours may not show due to the stress.

Did you look at the tanks on either side or above this tank and seeing if the main bunch is in one of these as this particular one may have jumped into that tank, isolating itself....

To my mind it looks like a female or juvi Salmon Red Rainbow fish (Glossolepis incisus), many pet shops get in mixed bags of rainbow fish and sometimes there can even be some unplanned strays they werent expecting in the mix.

Although it may be something in the Rainbow fish family I do not believe this to be a Boesmani.

A google image search of "lake kutubu rainbow fish" brings up several images that are similar to the one above but I'm unable to pinpoint exactly which it may be.

I did look in other tanks to see if there were any others but there were not. This was the only one that looked like this. It was also a bit longer than the rainbow boesmanis in addition to the other physical differences. The fin shape is very similar though. I know that sometimes stores get accidental fish. One store I went to had one lone flame tetra that came in accidentally with the guppies. I bought it because I have flame tetras and I hated to think of the poor little thing not living with friends. I also saw some kind of stiphodon or goby labeled as a stiphodon atropurpureus when it clearly was not.

Baccus, I came to the same conclusion. The size of the eye relative to the head, the overall shape, and the lack of pronounced scales do look like some of the pictures of the red salmon females. The only thing is that none of the fish in the pictures I saw were quite as yellow as the one in the store. The description on animal-world says that the females are olive colored. Perhaps they fade a bit as they grow older.

Whatever it is, I sure hope its social and physical needs will be met wherever its future home will be. I think the yellow-gold color of the fish above is quite beautiful and I'm sure someone will buy it. I just hope that its needs are the same as a rainbow boesmani because that's what it is being sold as.
