After lots of online research I decided to try a product that said it would remove cyanobacteria without harming fish or other plants. I had to get it from USA as I couldn't find a UK stockist. I'd been trying to keep it in check by siphoning what I could of the plants but it was at best a draw. I could get rid of most of it but next day it was back again. I bit the bullet and ordered the "cure"  UltraLife Blue-green slime stain remover. It took about 8 days to arrive and I dosed it and watched as the cyanobacteria disappeared over the next 3 days.

Many of the reviews I read stated that as well as getting rid of the stuff, it hasn't returned to their tanks. Here's hoping. So far I'm absolutely delighted with it.

None of my fish showed the slightest reaction to it and my plants are growing much more quickly now that they aren't covered with gunk.

that's good to know. I tried an easylife one recently, think it was called blue/green exit, but no luck but then mine is between the glass and the substrate so it'll be hard to shift

Based on what the label says it is some sort of supplement that favors other bacteria over the ones you want to remove.  End result is nutrient levels go down and algae runs out of food.  I might have to give this a try.  I tried to find out the ingredients but the MSDS doesn't list them.

There's a medicine you can get in the US, erythromycine? that isn't available in the UK that is supposed to work too.

I don't think it would work in that as its like very fine particles that settle on the plants.

Before and after.......

What's that plant Munroco? I like it.

Good to know about that treatment. I had some on my floating plants a couple of years ago. I kept pulling bits out and removing the affected plants, but I got rid of the lot in the end. I have some between the glass and the substrate like Akasha now which is very annoying. I know that this won't work for that though.

I'm not sure TBH, I got it as part of a job lot on Ebay. The nearest I can see is Lymnophilla aromatica. I like it too.

Its growing quite well so I snipped the tops of a couple of plants and stuck them in the gravel, they seem to be growing. Someone may be able to ID it from this pic.

Just an update on this, its now 6 weeks since I dosed the tank. All signs of cynobacteria were gone within a few days and so far it has not returned. I did have an outbreak of green hair/thread algae. I don't know if it was related or not. That seems to be dying back now. Very happy with the result.
