Help! Shrimp Acting Weird - Dying and Krib fry dying

So when will the copper leave my tank through the filter or will it never leave thanks from tom

I forgot to say I have added stress coat + to the tank and it is suppose to remove chlorine and detoxifies heavy metals. Will this help the Shrimp if it is the copper that is making them unhappy.

Thanks from tom

Copper can be notoriously hard to remove, provided the cooper came on your plants and is not occuring in your water supply then you may be able to remove it and will need to be more careful in future of where you purchase plants from.

Continue to use Prime and activated carbon in your filter, the jury is out on if activated carbon actually removes copper but it certainly wont hurt. You could also get Seachem Purigen, and put it in the filter. Purigen will remove a lot more nasties than any other method or chemical.

Sadly I fear it maybe to late for your shrimp, the initial survivors might hang in for a bit but I fear this close incounter (most likely with cooper) may have set them up for secondary illnesses. In the mean time do you have another tank or container that you could transfer the shrimp too? One that doesnt have any suspected toxins? As long as the water is not compatible to the shrimp they will continue to hang around the surface and even try to escape the tank all together. Also while in the water that they are no happy in , it is stressing the shrimp and leaving them more open to the secondary infections I already warned about.

The shrimp aren't doing much better I have 2 that stay on the bottom of the tank, 2 that have died and the rest are still on the surface. Anything that I can do?

To be honest, I do not think there is not much else you can do if you have followed the above advice

IMO, polyfilter is probably your best bet in helping ot remove the copper or toxins from your tank.

Guess its cross your fingers and hope for the best.

I tried to add shrimp to my aquarium twice.  In each time they could not be found  after two weeks..  I eventually concluded that total alkalinity was a possible cause.  due to hard faucet water I have been using RO water in my aquarium RO water is naturally low in calcium and magnesium.  Without calcium shrimp cannot molt and as a result will die.

I then started a mix of calcium and magnesium carbonate.  and tried shrimp again.  This time I have seen the shrimp successfully molts several times and they are healthy and active 3 months after adding them.  Since I have started adding Calcium and magnesium I have also found that plants can easily  remove much of the calcium and magnesium in the water.   Recently my total alkalinity crashed and and I am trying to get it back up.    I never saw the behavior you describe  but based on my experience  you might want to consider adding some calcium. to your aquarium.

Since Tuesday I have had 11 kribensis fry and 10 cherry shrimp die.
My tank is a planted 70 litre with only them in. It now only has 5 shrimp in. The tank has been set up for 3 years it has a water change every week. It's had 2 this week. Nothing added apart from my plant fertiliser.

Water test

Ammonia 0
Nitrite 0
Nitrate 10ppm
Ph 7.4
Hardness 12
Temperature 25.2 Celsius.

Any ideas on why they would die thanks from tom
