Hi, I recently caught a fish from a river and I was going to raise it. I think the fish is pregnant and I have no males to fertilize the eggs once they come out. Can someone please tell me what type of fish I have, and what i should do? Thanks

In order to know the needs of the fish and to properly take care of if you must know what kind of fish it is.

At first glance it looks like a mosquito fish.

If that's the case then you'll find they do best in a pond where they eat insect larvae, especially that of mosquitoes which is where they get their common name from.

They can be kept in a tank as small as 20 gallons. That tank should be fully cycled and heavily planted with plants that arch over to shade the light or with floating plants to do the same.

They are not tropical fish and do best in temperatures between 65-70 degrees.

They are related to guppy and are livebearers. So if it is pregnant the male has already done his job.

If not in an appropriate outdoor pond or fed live insect larvae you should do as Noahsfish suggests and return it to the wild. Your best bet would be to buy a very affordable guppy from your pet store.

If this is a mosquito fish, could I also please add to NOT put it in a tank with Guppies! May not even be a good match with Endlers or Platies. Not sure on Mollies or Swords as they are bigger but 1 Mosquito fish female sold to me as a guppy made a quick lunch out of several of my guppies' tails within about an hour's time. I agree with releasing it. But if you are not, please read up on what this fish needs including tank mates.
